It'll be marked down as a failed attempt to swim from Nantucket to Martha's Vineyard, but a swimmer came close this week.
Doug McConnell was swimming to raise money for ALS disease research through his Illinois-based non-profit called A Long Swim.
McConnell started at Nantucket's Eel Point and attempted to swim to the Edgartown Lighthouse, and made it within a half-mile of completing the 18-mile journey.
He had to stop because of rip currents, jellyfish and other hazards, according to A Long Swim.
