The Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works with their contractor, Robert B. Our Company, is scheduled to reconstruct the pavement in the intersection of South Street and Sea Street beginning the week of April 8th, contingent on weather and other factors. The work is expected to take about three weeks to complete.
Normal work hours will be between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. The work limits will extend up to 400 feet along each approach to the intersection.
The pavement reconstruction will involve a process called full-depth reclamation in which large equipment is used to pulverize and mix the existing asphalt and underlying gravel base, and then to grade and compact the resulting material to form a suitable base for the new pavement. After this is completed, it will be paved over with asphalt. Vehicles can drive on the compacted material until the asphalt is placed.
Businesses and residences along the work zone will remain accessible to traffic throughout the work, subject to detours and police direction. The following detours are planned: 1) eastbound traffic of the West End Rotary will be detoured to North Street, and then travel south on High School Road to east on South Street; 2) eastbound traffic on the two-way section of Main Street east of the rotary will be detoured to Stevens Street northbound, then travel east on North Street, and then travel south on High School Road to east on South Street; 3) southbound traffic on the two-way section of Main Street east of the rotary will be directed to Newton Street southbound, then travel east on Maple Street, and then travel south on Sea Street; 4) southbound traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Sea Street Extension will be detoured westbound toward the aforementioned detours.
The equipment used to perform this work will be loud and will create vibrations that may be felt by residents and others in this area. The contractor is required to implement dust control measures.
Traffic during construction operations will be delayed and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the construction work. As always, please slow down and use extreme caution when traveling through the road construction areas and detour routes. Follow posted safety and detour signs as well as directions from police officers.
