Barnstable Police Warn Of IRS Tax Scams

BPD/IRS Scam Phone Calls

3/14/19

It’s tax season and telephone scam artists are once again out to steal people’s money or identity.

The Barnstable Police Department says the criminals pose as IRS officials and demand the victim pay a bogus tax bill by sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer.

Scammers may even threaten to arrest, deport, or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

Barnstable Police say the IRS will not call you and demand an immediate payment. If you owe taxes they will send you a bill through the mail.

The IRS also will not ask for your credit card or threaten to being the police to your house to arrest you.

Police say if you receive such a call, hang up immediately and contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and report the call. You can use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page or call 800-366-4484.
