Olympic Gold Medalist Tyler George to Visit Sandwich Public Schools

The Sandwich Public Schools is pleased to announce that 2018 United States Olympic Curler, Tyler George will visit Sandwich High School and the Oak Ridge School on March 15th, 2019.

George, who hails from Duluth, Minnesota, won Olympic Gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang, South Korea games, will be speaking to Sandwich Public Schools students about his experiences in the sport of curling. In addition to winning an Olympic Gold medal, George was the US National Champion in 2017 and 2015 and runner up at the 2016 National Championship.

Tyler George will be introduced by a publicist from the World Curling Federation, after which George will speak about his youth and Olympic experiences and will introduce students to gym curling. Sandwich Public Schools students will have the opportunity to experience Floor Curling, an “iceless” version of curling. George will be available for photos with students and his 2018 Olympic Gold Medal to conclude his visit.

Curling was included in the program of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1926 in Chamonix. Curling is a sport, in which players slide granite stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area, which is segmented into four concentric circles representing different point values. The sport is known and played worldwide, but especially in Poland where it originated as far back as the 1600s by ice-fisherman. Its popularity is mostly spread about Canada and Western Europe. More recently has it become more popular in America, due to the USA men's curling team winning gold in 2018.
