Protect Our Cape Cod Aquifer is calling on all Cape Cod towns to stop using glyphosate-based herbicides on town properties.
POCCA says such herbicides, such as Round-Up, have proven to be harmful to humans and bees. POCCA President, Laura Kelley, has been taking her message to the select boards of all 15 towns on the Cape as well as the various boards of health:
"The ask is to have boards of health in all towns write the regulation that they will not use glyphosate-based products on any town-owned land," says Kelley. "This makes it sort of a law, a regulation, it's not just a policy; it has more teeth at the board of health level. This is a health concern, a health matter."
Kelley says Wellfleet and Orleans already have a written policy at the selectmen level while Chatham, Brewster, and Dennis have all said they will give a high recommendation to their boards of health to write up a no-use policy regarding glypho-sate-based herbicides on town property.
