Lt. Governor Karyn Polito was in Sandwich Thursday to award a $1.5 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant for the George Fernandes Way access road project.
The project will connect Terrapin Ridge to an existing development owned by the Sandwich Housing Authority. The MassWork funds will be used to improve roads around the development and increase pedestrian safety.
"This is what the role of the MassWorks program is," Lt. Governor Karyn Polito told WXTK News, "and to provide those infrastructure dollars to attract private investment, integrate more housing and economic development. We were very happy to make this award to Sandwich. They've earned it. The community, the leadership, we know they will do their part to make it happen."
With the infrastructure improvements to the Terrapin Ridge development, 30 new units of affordable housing will be constructed alongside the existing 12 units. The property is owned by the Sandwich Housing Authority and will be developed by the Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development.
"Something like this really makes a tremendous difference," said Gabrielle "Gabby" Geller, the Development Director for the Women's Institute for Housing and Economic Development. "We're really proud to have a great team with us. Brown, Lindquist, Fenuccio, and Raber Architects provided us a really incredible design that really makes a community where there is just twelve units now. I think those 42 units will really be able to come together as a community with the kind of amenities that everyone wants."
Construction is set to begin in 2020.
