Hyannis Woman Charged in Theft of Auction Item

On 06/22/2018, at approximately 10:30pm, members of the Barnstable Police Department responded to the Cape Codder Resort on Rte 132 in Hyannis for a reported larceny. The Cape Codder Resort was hosting a charity fundraiser sponsored by the Behavioral Health Provider, Coalition of Cape Cod. It was entitled “Back the Blue/A Night to Remember Sean”. The event was in honor of Yarmouth Police Department K-9 Sgt Sean Gannon who was killed in the line-of-duty on April 12, 2018.

Tickets were $25.00 which included a live auction and raffles. All proceeds were donated to the Yarmouth Police Foundation. Witnesses told Barnstable Police that one of the silent auction items had gone missing. The item was a decorative blue box containing golf balls, baseball hats, and a variety of shirts.

A review of the security video showed a woman removing the item from a table and leaving the venue. Further investigation identified the woman as Maureen E. Wiggin, 56, of Hyannis. Wiggin was questioned at her home by Barnstable Police Officers Corbin Fries and Jeffrey Jackson, who advised Wiggin the incident was captured on video. Wiggin was initially uncooperative, but the stolen item was eventually recovered from the trunk of her vehicle.

The auction item was returned to the event and awarded to its winner. Wiggin will be summoned to Barnstable District Court for Larceny of Property under $1200. Wiggin never purchased a ticket for the event.
