The town of Mashpee is seeking input from residents on redesigning its town seal.
Mashpee residents voted in 2019 to establish a town seal committee, which is now tasked with finding a new design.
In a statement, the town said the current seal “is not reflective of Mashpee’s history and is seen as a symbol reflective of the genocide of native people.”
It depicts a Native American man holding a bow and arrow while above him, a floating arm—presumed to be that of English military leader, Myles Standish—raises a sword.
A survey will be posted to the town of Mashpee’s website on March 15th.
