Nantucket/Vacation Rental Tax
1/24/19
Nantucket voters will be asked at the annual town meeting in April to approve setting the local portion of the state’s new short-term rental vacation tax at 4 percent.
The Inquirer and Mirror reports that the selectmen voted 3 to 2 to place the article on the warrant.
The local portion of the so-called Airbnb tax can be as high as 6 percent.
Board member Rita Higgins was reportedly in favor of a 6 percent local tax to generate income for waste reduction and traffic improvements and increase funding for affordable housing.
The town’s Finance Director estimates the tax would generate up to 4 million dollars if it was set at 6 percent, but the board was concerned that could hurt the town’s tourism industry and settled on 4 percent.
