Smoking Laws For Barnstable Go Into Effect Today

The new smoking laws for the Town of Barnstable go into effect this today.
On Sunday the regulation now expands the definition of tobacco products to include any product(s) derived from tobacco or nicotine including e-cigarettes and vaping devices, increases the minimum legal sales age for tobacco products to 21, and bans tobacco product sales in educational institutions. A tobacco sales permit will not be issued to any new applicant for a retail location within five hundred feet of a public or private elementary or secondary school.
This regulation also bans smoking within ten feet of any municipal building entranceway accessible to the public, bans smoking at municipal- owned parks, playgrounds, beaches, and athletic fields, and bans smoking at public transportation waiting areas (i.e. bus and taxi waiting areas). The use of e-cigarettes is prohibited wherever smoking is prohibited.
