Wareham Police responded Monday night to a report of a suicidal male armed with a rifle in one of the parking lots of Tobey Hospital

Officers found the man in his car on High Street and advised the hospital to go into lockdown.

When officers made contact with the subject he started shouting obscenities and said he would not be taken alive. Furthermore he said he was armed with a rifle and was going to force the police to shoot him.

In a release, police said it was a “Suicide By Cop” situation and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Swat Unit was brought to the scene.

After several minutes the man stepped from the car and quickly reached behind his back as if pulling out a weapon and yelling that he was going to shoot.

When it was confirmed that he didn’t have a weapon, police moved in to subdue the subject. An “air rifle” was found on the front floor of the vehicle.

The unidentified man was taken to Tobey Hospital for evaluation under police guard.

There were no injuries during the incident which was over by 8:25 P.M.
