The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection penalized a Wellesley resident for a home he demolished in Mashpee.
Dean Behrend was fined $42,500 for violations of Massachusetts air pollution regulations.
The house, once located at 6 Overlook Knoll Road, was torn down in May 2016; Behrend knew the basement contained asbestos-containing material attached to pipes.
An investigation was launched by MassDEP and the Mashpee Fire Department, which led to a report stating Behrend did not remove the material prior to demo activities as is required by law, as well as disposing the asbestos improperly.
An asbestos removal plan has been prepared by Behrend to properly address the contamination and remove all of the waste materials safely.
