Plovers Return to Nauset Beach
The small, but mighty Piping Plovers are returning to Cape Cod and some of the first ones are creating nests on the trails and sand at Nauset Beach in Orleans, soon to result in the closing of those areas to beach goers.
The Orleans Department of Natural Resources says the town is mandated by State and Federal Regulations to protect the threatened species and will be closing Nauset Beach South and Nauset Spit in early June.
Visitors are asked to respect all symbolic fencing and avoid all cordoned off areas where the birds are nesting.
If the first nesting attempts are unsuccessful, the plovers will be forced to re-nest and that will lead to longer closures of the popular beach areas.
