Regional Fisheries Council Votes to Protect Deep-Sea Corals
2/7/18
The New England Fisheries Management Council is establishing protections for a deep-sea area south of Nantucket.
The council voted last week to establish a conservation area that covers over 25-thousand square miles of coral habitat that stretches as far north as a hundred miles south of the island.
Officials with the Pew Charitable Trusts organization says the measure is a major expansion of protecting coral habitat from dredging and dragging fishing practices.
