Yarmouth Police Receive Violence Against Women Act Grant

YPD/Victim Services

The Yarmouth Police Department will soon be hiring a full time Victim Specialist/Advocate.

Last fall the police department applied for a “Violence Against Women Act” grant after having been unsuccessful in applying  several times in the past 10 years.

This time around, with memorandums of agreement and letters of support from Children’s Cove, the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, the Regional Coordinator of the Cape and Islands Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner or “SANE” program, the Yarmouth Senior Center and Independence House, the department  received a “VAWA” grant of 55-thousand dollars a year for 4 years.

The amount is 75 percent of the position’s salary and benefits.

This week the Yarmouth Board of Selectmen approved the 25 percent match required for the department to receive the grant.

YPD officials  say the hiring process will be announced and begin soon.
