Officials on Nantucket say the Sea Street Pump Station bypass is functioning as intended with no reported issues overnight. Raw sewage is not being discharged into Nantucket Harbor. Roughly three million gallons of sewage was dumped into the harbor following Thursday’s sewer main failure.
Officials with Clean Harbors are on Nantucket and have met with officials from the Department of Environmental Management. The plan to clean-up and decontaminate the area will be reviewed this morning at a public information session for residents and businesses in the affected area. That meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Public Safety Facility at 4 Fairgrounds Road.
Officials sent 36 water samples off island on Tuesday and say testing of the harbor will continue until the samples come back clean.
Sidewalks and streets in the area of the sewer main failure remain closed but are expected to open once they are cleaned, decontaminated, and inspected for structural integrity. Officials expect that will take a couple more days.
