Nantucket Police responded to Nobadeer beach late this morning for an unresponsive person in the water.
Officers arrived on scene and were initially told a group of swimmers were in distress which included a small child.
A man in his 40s was discovered unresponsive still in the water; he was pulled out by rescuers and later pronounced dead. Two other people were taken out of the water and evaluated; neither of which were seriously injured.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, however a high surf advisory was in effect beginning this morning due to hurricane Gert’s path off shore; the advisory is still in effect until 8 o’clock tonight.
Officials say high surf and dangerous rip currents could result in the potential for life threatening conditions for those entering the surf.
