Falmouth police responded to an accident involving a car and a utility pole Thursday night.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:17 on the North Falmouth Highway near the intersection at McMenamy Drive.
Falmouth Police, Fire and Rescue, with assistance from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, arrived on scene and found a blue Toyota Scion off the roadway with the driver trapped inside; the car crashed through a utility pole causing live wires to fall across the street.
The driver, 58-year-old Francis Vierkant, was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Falmouth Hospital, then transported to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.
The road was closed for an extended period of time while the scene was cleared and the utility pole was replaced.
Falmouth Police are investigating the cause of the accident, however a preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was travelling north when it failed to negotiate a curve in the road, and struck the pole.
Police say Vierkant has 18 prior drunk driving offenses on his record, and it appears alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
