BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Rob Gronkowski is retired from the NFL, but the future Hall-of-Famer left a lasting impression on the Patriots' latest Super Bowl trophy when he visited Fenway for the Red Sox' home opener.

He left a baseball-sized groove in the Lombardi trophy after using it as a bat, while Julian Edelman was warming up for his first pitch!

Pats Jason McCourty and Duron Harmon told the story to the team's web site

"Gronk thought of a great idea—he'd play around and get a swing in," McCourty said. "As he's lined up, Jules is the pitcher, Gronk's standing there and I think we're all under the impression, no way is he gonna swing a Lombardi Trophy!"

"Then literally at the last second when 11 throws the ball, we see 87 go from a batting position to a bunt," Harmon said.

He broke it, he bought it.

Harmon said, hey, that's Gronk.

"If anybody could do it and get away with it, it'd be Mr. Gronkowski himself," he said.

McCourty said the trophy isn't damaged...it's special. Vintage.
