BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New England Patriots player Lance Kendricks has been suspended without pay for the first game of 2019, according to the team.

A spokesperson said that Kendricks has violated "the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse."

Kendricks can return to the Patriots' active roster on September 9. He can still "participate in all remaining preseason practices and the team's final preseason game," according to the NFL.

The tight end signed with the Patriots last month after playing two years with the Green Bay Packers.
