A proposal to limit the speed of most vessels to protect endangered North Atlantic right whales is coming under opposition.
Under NOAA's Vessel Strike Reduction regulation, speed would be reduced to ten knots for vessels under 65 feet in length in certain areas of the ocean where the whales are spotted.
This limit is in effect in Cape Cod Bay through April 30th.
The state Division of Marine Fisheries is considering extending the limit to other waters.
Shipping and yachting interests charge the proposal is flawed and can damage coastal economies.
Advocates for the rule say ship strikes are a leading cause of death of right whales, of which there are only about 350 of the species left.
