NRC: Money Misspent From Pilgrim Decommissioning Fund

The company charged with decommissioning the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station has misused funds meant for that purpose.

A federal inspection report by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission determined a subsidiary of Pilgrim's owner, Holtec International improperly spent 84-thousand dollars from the trust, which is funded by ratepayers.

An NRC spokesperson says over two years, ending in 2022, Holtec used the money for public relations purposes, including a Chamber of Commerce sponsorship and holiday events.

Holtec officials called the issue an error in charging to the wrong account, and the money has since been returned to the fund.
