MTA Files Final Signatures Toward MCAS Ballot Question

The Massachusetts Teachers Association will deliver a final batch of signatures to the Secretary of State, as part of an effort to eliminate the MCAS Graduation Requirements. MTA officials have reportedly achieved 135-thousand signatures toward a ballot question on the matter.

Massachusetts is one of eight states that require passing the MCAS test to graduate.

The question would allow schools to replace the test with certification from districts that students have shown mastery of state standards.

Questions with the required certified signature must go before the Legislature; if no action is taken, groups would have to collect 12-thousand more signatures between May 1st and June 19th, 2024 to get the measure onto the November 5th ballot.
