The Dukes County Sheriff Robert Ogden says he can’t support a measure being considered by the state legislature that would create a five-year moratorium on new jail construction.
The Sheriff told the legislative committee that he is overseeing a 150-year-old lockup that needs either a complete revamp or a brand-new structure.
The Governor has already proposed about 8 million dollars for renovations and modular cells, but he says that may not even be enough.
Governor Baker vetoed a similar bill last year.
Governor Healey says she would support a moratorium but only if it does not interfere with providing safe facilities across the state.
