See Emma Stone As Punky Cruella De Vil In Disney's '101 Dalmatians' Remake

The 2019 Met Gala Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion - Social Ready

Emma Stone's Cruella de Vil transformation is completely unreal.

At the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, on Saturday (August 24), Disney released the first photo of the Oscar winner as the dog-hating villain in the new 101 Dalmatians remake, Cruella — and let's just say, Stone certainly looks the part. “How did she get that way, and how did she get so cruel?” Walt Disney Studios president of production Sean Bailey asked audience members during the unveiling, per Us Weekly.

In the image, below, the 30-year-old actress looks barely recognizable wearing Cruella's signature black-and-white tresses, a pitch-black leather outfit and matching mascara while holding back three leashed Dalmatians, while her henchmen stand in the distance of a vacant lot.

Stone — who stars alongside Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Joel Fry in the movie — told the crowd via a video message that Cruella will be set in punk-era London during the 1970s.

Academy Award-winning costume designer Jenny Beaven (Mad Max: Fury Road) created Stone's punky Cruella look — and it's since received mixed responses from fans on Twitter.

"SHE SNAPPED. PERIOD," one user commented, as another added: "Emma is a legend and one of my favorite actresses I am SO excited for this."

Despite the excitement, some fans doubt Stone will live up to Cruella's originator, Glenn Close, who previously played the villain in the 1996 live-action film and 2000 sequel. One critic wrote of Close as "THE Cruella DeVill we all needed.. Yes Emma Stone is a great actress but seriously [why youthwash] this iconic character?"

Is Stone fit for the part? Time will tell: Cruella opens in theaters May 28, 2021.
