Mashpee Chairman Reacts To Trump Tweet About Land-Trust Bill

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council Chairman Cedric Cromwell is reacting to last week's activity surrounding the legislation that would keep the Mashpee land in federal trust. The U.S. House decided not take up a vote on the bill through a process that would require two-thirds support, but instead Democrats say a vote will come in the future. This was after President Trump urged Republicans not to vote for H.R. 312, calling it a special interest casino bill. Cromwell said the bill is a deeply-honorable bipartisan legislative effort to correct significant wrongs that have been perpetrated against his tribe. The president of the National Congress of American Indians also issued a statement following the Trump tweet, saying the legislation is not a gaming bill.
