Cape Cod Woman Sentenced/Mail Fraud

2/28/19

26 year old Ashley Barrett of Hyannis was sentenced in federal court in Boston Tuesday for her role in a fraudulent lottery scheme.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that between September 2012 and January 2016, Barrett and others devised a scheme to defraud elderly victims across the country by falsely representing to them that they had won millions of dollars in a lottery and that in order to receive their winnings, they had to pay taxes or fees.

Twelve victims, ranging in age from 73 to 93, wired Barrett payments and checks totaling over 325-thousand dollars....that figure does not included envelopes of cash victims mailed to Barrett.

Barrett was sentenced to 21 months in prison; three years supervised release and ordered to pay 325-thousand 148 dollars in restitution.
