Center For Coastal Studies Researcher Finds Rare Fish on Coast Guard Beach

Rare, Glow-In-The-Dark Fish Found On Cape Beach

2/23/19

The Center for Coastal Studies is excited about a rare fish found on a Cape Cod Beach.

The Center says last week, a Fisheries Research Director was walking on Coast Guard Beach in Eastham with his partner when she reached down and scooped up a lifeless silver fish.

It was quickly recognized as a Myctophid, a deep ocean fish that glows in the dark.

That's a species that lives almost a mile deep into the ocean, and the Center says the odds of encountering one on a Cape Beach are incredibly low.
