Outcry over Beaty Tweet Broadens as Legislators Call for His Resignation

Six of the eight members of the Cape and Islands Legislative Delegation have called for Barnstable County Commissioner Ron Beaty to resign immediately in the wake of the latter’s tweet that was seen by them and others as homophobic.

Beaty’s tweet, which was still up on his page as of Thursday night, asked if gay politicians are too self-absorbed and self-centered to adequately represent all of their constituents fairly and equally.

In a letter signed by State Senator Vinny deMacedo and State Representatives Tim Whelan, Will Crocker, David Viera, Randy Hunt, and Dylan Fernandez and sent to the statehouse, the delegation said, in part, “we defend our colleagues who were attacked and encourage Mr. Beaty to stop besmirching the reputation of everyone in county government, both elected and appointed, by resigning his office immediately.”

Two members of the Cape and Islands legislative delegation, State Senator Julian Cyr of Truro and State Rep. Sarah Peake of Provincetown, are gay.
