Inmate Labor Saves Cape Towns Thousands Of Dollars

Sheriff’s Inmate Provide Labor2/13/19Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings has released the 2018 calendar year statistics for work performed by his community service inmate work crews.The year-end tally was 16, 120 hours of inmate work totaling approximately $481, 665 of donated labor for projects in 14 of the Cape’s 15 towns.Inmates provided labor on projects including landscaping and painting at the historic Coast Guard Museum in Barnstable Village, carpentry and painting at the Drama Guild in Chatham, boardwalk repairs at a Yarmouthport beach, and providing off-loading services of food supplies at town pantries in Hyannis and Pocasset several times during the year.Sheriff Cummings says the inmates, in many cases,turned what was a “budget buster” into something doable to help both taxpayers and some of the numerous non-profits across Cape Cod.
