Tommy Leonard, Falmouth RR Founder, Passes Away

Falmouth has lost an icon.

Tommy Leonard, the founder of the Falmouth Road Race has passed away.

Leonard died Wednesday night at JML Care Center in Falmouth due to health complications.

He started the Falmouth Road Race in 1973 as a fundraiser for the girl’s track team at Falmouth high school. The 7-mile distance from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights represented the distance between Leonard’s two favorite watering holes. 92 people were entered in that first race which has become one of the premier mid-distance races in the country with a field of about 12,000 runners of all abilities.

 Tommy Leonard was 85.
