The head of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Stephanie Pollack, wants one billion dollars from the federal government to build two new bridges over the Cape Cod Canal.
At Monday’s MassDOT board meeting, Pollack said her preference is to construct two new bridges and not continue to spend money on the aging Bourne and Sagamore bridges.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns both bridges, is currently engaged in a study on whether the Bourne and Sagamore bridges should be refurbished or whether the time has come for two new bridges. The Bourne and Sagamore bridges were built between 1933 and 1935.
