Today in International Human Rights Day and the Barnstable Human Rights Commission will celebrate the day with a breakfast at Hyannis Golf Course on Route 132 in Hyannis.
The guest speaker at this morning’s event is Gretchen Arvanitopoulos, the Vice President of CORD, or Cape Organization for Rights of the Disabled.
At the breakfast, the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission will announce the winners of the 2018 Rosenthal and Cornerstone Awards.
This year’s Rosenthal award winner is Dan Wolf, the CEO of Cape Air and former two-term State Senator. The Rosenthal Community Champion Award, was named after Irving Leopold Rosenthal and is given to those in the public sector who are recognized by their peers, community, and associates as individuals who have fostered and supported human rights, concepts, and ideals, particularly those who have worked to advance human rights and to eliminate discrimination.
The Cape and Islands Special Olympics will be presented the Cornerstone Award, given to individuals recognized by their peers, community, and associates as those who have fostered and supported human rights, concepts, and ideals. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Special Olympics movement.
