Heroes in Transition Helps Fund New K9 for the YPD

Heroes in Transition, the Mashpee-based nonprofit providing assistance to veterans, service members, and military families, has presented a check to the Yarmouth Police Department to fund the purchase of a new K9.

Heroes in Transition, or HIT, Executive Director Nicole Spencer says the money was raised through the 3rd Annual RUCK4HIT, a 220-mile race through all towns on Cape Cod, held over a 36 hour period during the first weekend in May. The RUCK4HIT is the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraiser and the organizing committee decided to use a portion of the proceeds from this year’s race to support the YPD.

About a month prior to this year’s event, YPD K9 Sgt. Sean Gannon was murdered while helping to serve an arrest warrant in Martsons Mills. His K9, Nero, was severely injured and while he survived his injuries, they were enough to prevent the Belgian Malinois from continuing as a working police dog.
