The national seashore is embarking on a major bicycle improvement project in Truro to implement a portion of the Outer Cape Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (Master Plan) of 2017; the plan was completed by Cape Cod Commission with the national seashore and the towns of Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown.
Superintendent Carlstrom announced today that “We have full funding for the Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail construction project and work will begin in October. The construction contract was awarded to Henry General Construction, Inc. of Springfield, MA. Bicyclists and pedestrians will benefit from having an updated, safer bicycle trail and by enabling connections to more destinations and share-the-road bicycle routes.”
The 1.9 mile Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail will be rehabilitated, including a new base course, widening and resurfacing. The construction will begin in early October.
The .8 mile Old King's Highway segment from Head of the Meadow Road to Coast Guard Road will be established and known as Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail Connector. An alternative permeable, stable surface was preferred in the Master Plan for this portion of Old King’s Highway, and the design was researched thoroughly to provide for a range of users and to establish proper runoff drainage. Bollards will be installed at either end of the connector to deter driving except for emergency and maintenance needs.
Completion of the entire project is anticipated by summer of 2019.
