West Barnstable dietitian Joan Trimble examines what it takes to adopt a vegan diet and other alternatives in this WXTK Better Health Report.
Are you considering going vegan?
Being a vegan means you give up all animal products, including dairy and eggs.
There are lots of studies showing that plant based diets have numerous health benefits.
However, a new study from Harvard University advises caution.
Because they found that just cutting back on animal products and increasing fruits, vegetables and whole grains has as many health benefits as a well done vegan diet.
And not only that, they found if you don’t do a vegan diet right, you can end up at high risk of heart disease. They found this among people who adhered to a vegan diet that skimped on the fruit and vegetables and ate mainly refined grains, pasta, fries, juices and sweets.
Think those people don’t exist? Well, they do, I’ve seen them. I always told people in my practice that if they want to go vegetarian or vegan, it’s a big responsibility and needs to be done correctly.
This is Joan Trimble wishing you wellness.
