Herring Runs of Cape Cod with Stephen G Waller

Osterville Public Library

Cape Cod hosts several dozen river herring runs. Two species of herring swim up the runs in April and May to spawn, then return to the ocean. Scientists believe they’ve been migrating up streams along the Atlantic since long before Cape Cod was scraped up by Ice Age glaciers.

The Centerville River is one of the Cape’s runs, and its robust migration has been one of the largest on the Cape in recent years. Steve Waller and Jane Ward live along the run, and organize the spring count. They will show slides, photos, and videos of the migration and the counting process. Please come with your questions about this amazing annual event. Saturday May 11th at 1pm at The Osterville Village Library.
