County Assembly Opposes Coast Guard Plan To Remove Navigational Buoys

The Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates cites safety concerns in opposing a U.S. Coast Guard plan to remove navigational buoys from Cape Cod's coastal waters.

During their most recent meeting, the delegates received a briefing from Chatham Harbormaster Jason Holm and Yarmouth Harbormaster David Condon who described how the buoys serve as essential navigational aids in a region with shifting shoals, strong currents, and frequently changing sea conditions.

Harbormaster Condon says the Coast Guard tells all mariners that they can't rely on one source of navigation, a chart plotter or the buoys and it's alarming to think it would take away one of those options.

The Assembly is planning to work with the County's Board of Regional Commissioners to send a letter expressing strong opposition to the Coast Guard plan.
