New technology has proven itself in the protection of endangered North Atlantic right whales.
Staff of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Maritime Information Systems announced they were able to send a text message to the bridge of a tanker.
The Automatic Identification System message informed the officer in command that the tanker had exceeded the speed limit of the management area in Cape Cod Bay.
Most vessels 65 feet or longer must travel at no more than ten knots through these areas.
The AIS is operated in cooperation with the US Coast Guard.
