Should Barnstable Police Remain In Civil Service?

Barnstable Town Council has approved funding for a study of whether to remove Barnstable's police department from the Massachusetts civil service.

The council approved 35-thousand dollars to fund consulting services and costs associated with the study.

Barnstable placed specific town positions under the civil service designation in 1937, but this requires towns to follow a hiring and promotions process.

The aim is to look at whether or not this is necessary.
