Truro Considers Lawsuit Over Cesspools

Truro officials are considering legal action against eight property owners who have neglected to take action to clean up and remove cesspools from their lands.

Cesspools were banned by the state in 1978, but many Outer Cape properties still had them due to grandfather clauses.

Removal of these from 181 Truro properties was mandated in 2021, and since then most have been cleared or progress made in that direction.

Eight, however, remain. Cesspools can expose drinking water, wetlands, and the species that live in them to pollution.
