Money Dries Up For Machine Gun Range On Cape

There will be no additional federal funding for a proposed machine gun range at Joint Base Cape Cod.

Efforts to put new money into the National Defense Authorization Act were included in the Senate version of the bill but removed after a joint conference committee reconciled the House and Senate documents.

The Massachusetts Army National Guard pushed for the range to keep troops current with new qualification standards.

Two bids have come in well above the 8-point-9-million-dollar estimate, and environmental officials are concerned about what the range could do to the Cape's sole aquifer.
