Nantucket Says No To Steamship Authority Changes

Nantucket's Select Board has expressed unanimous opposition to a Senate bill that seeks to change the voting structure of the Steamship Authority's governing body.

The letter to the Joint Committee on Municipal and Regional Government opposed Senator Susan Moran's bill to alter the weighing system for authority members.

Board members stated they were not given proper notification of a meeting earlier this month on the matter, and that the bill negatively affects both Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.

The Nantucket board further pointed out that a vote from Barnstable, Falmouth, or New Bedford was required for actions taken by the SSA.

The committee is still reviewing the legislation.
