Student Population Declines On Vineyard

Schools on Martha's Vineyard largely showed a slight decline in student enrollment, according to the state-mandated census.

Taken in October, the census showed 2,184 students, down 69 from the same time last year.

The Chilmark and Tisbury schools were the only two that showed an increase, with three and one additional students, respectively.

uperintendent Richard Smith says one trend of note is that children with disabilities and those learning English are now a significant segment of each school's population.

Smith adds there are increased behavioral and discipline issues, in part due to the lockdown from the coronavirus pandemic.
