Horseshoe Crab Blood Processing Company Eyes Harwich Location

A company that processes horseshoe crab blood is looking to open up shop in Harwich.

Charles River laboratories, headquartered in Wilmington, processes the blood to be used for testing medical devices and drugs for harmful bacteria.

In an application to the town, the company says the process does not harm the crabs and that it would work with local fishermen and harvesters to collect them.

The facility would be located next to the town’s transfer station and would employ up to 25 people.

The Harwich Planning Board will make a decision tomorrow.
