Barnstable Police Issues Warning On Mailbox Scam

Barnstable Police say they’ve been seeing a rise in mailbox “fishing scams” over the past few weeks across town.

In mailbox fishing, thieves drop various items covered in sticky substances into mailboxes to retrieve deposited envelopes.

They then look for mail containing checks, alter them, and cash them, leading to victims losing thousands of dollars.

The U.S. Post Office is in the process of replacing older blue mailboxes with the pull down envelope slot with newer more secure mailboxes that only have an envelope slit to place your mail through.
