Lifeguard Shortage Affects Cape Beaches

A lifeguard shortage is affecting Massachusetts beaches, including on the Cape, amid a surge in drownings in the bay state.

The Boston Globe reports that in the Town of Barnstable the effort to hire 105 lifeguards for the summer is about two-dozen short currently, despite a large recruitment effort.

Factors in the shortage include the pandemic delaying certification and re-certification efforts and a backlog in seasonal visas, according to the American Lifeguard Association.
