It was a big night for the retired Deputy Police Chief of Yarmouth.
Steven Xiarhos defeated challenger Thomas Keyes for the Republican nomination in the Fifth Barnstable District.
This is the seat made available when State Representative Randy Hunt announced his retirement at the end of the current legislative session.
Xiarhos took 70% of the vote.
He will face Democrat James Dever in the November general election.
