SSA Begins Implementing Consultant's Recommendations

The Steamship Authority has started to take action on the recommendations made by an independent consulting firm that was tasked with reviewing the ferry services  operations.

At Tuesday’s board of governors meeting, hiring new managers and coming up with a strategic plan were at the top of the list of priorities for the SSA.

Seattle-based HMS Consulting’s report on the Authority listed ten recommendations including a re-vamping of management. Currently, the SSA is looking to fill three existing high-level positions; treasurer, port captain, and human resources director. HMS Consulting recommended the creaton of two additional high-level positions. SSA General Manager Robert Davis says in addition to the two recommended positions, he would look for authorization to create a third.

At least one Steamship Authority governor said the changes will mean rate increases to the customer.
