MV School Officials Take Action to Protect Students

The Martha’s Vineyard School Department is looking to strengthen its policies on anti-bias.

The Vineyard Gazette reports that Assistant School Superintendent Richard Smith outlined proposed changes to an all-Island regional school committee meeting.

Smith says the proposed addendum targets a specific group of children; transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students. The addendum includes a link to a web page containing guidance from the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

In 1993, the school department  put in place a safe schools program for LGBTQ students in an effort to reduce suicides and harassment
